How to Build a Balanced College List: The Target School Strategy

college list likely target reach dream breakdown

When it comes to college recruiting, one of the most crucial steps is building a well-balanced list of schools. Many student-athletes make the mistake of aiming too high or too low, but the key to success lies in strategic diversification.

The Four-Tier Approach

Think of your college list as a series of concentric circles, each representing a different level of admission probability:

Dream or Wildcard Schools (3 schools) These are your long-shot programs – the highly competitive schools where admission and roster spots are extremely competitive. Maybe it's that Division I powerhouse or prestigious academic institution. While the odds may be slim, these schools are worth pursuing because you never know what might happen. Keep this list small to avoid disappointment and wasted effort.

Reach Schools (4schools) These programs are challenging but within the realm of possibility. You meet most of the requirements, but you'll need everything to align perfectly – strong academics, impressive athletic performance, and perhaps a bit of luck. These schools should stretch your goals without being completely unrealistic.

Target Schools (5 schools) This is the heart of your list. Target schools are where your academic credentials and athletic abilities align well with the program's typical recruit profile. You have a solid, realistic chance of both admission and making the team. This should be your largest category because these schools offer the best probability of success.

Likely Schools (3 schools) These are your safety nets – programs where you exceed the typical admitted student and recruited athlete profile. You're confident about both academic admission and earning a roster spot. While they might not be your dream schools, they offer excellent backup options and could surprise you with opportunities for significant playing time and academic scholarships.
