Leaving your pet behind is the hardest part of moving to college. While most schools only allow a small fish tank, some campuses welcome four-legged roommates. If you want to bring your dog to the dorms or need a campus with a full-time therapy animal, check out these schools.

Eckerd College

Eckerd is a pioneer in pet-friendly living. They allow dogs, cats, and even large birds in designated dorms. The campus features a dedicated dog park and hosts an annual graduation ceremony specifically for pets. You can even bring your pet to some outdoor school events. Just make sure your dog weighs under 40 pounds and has lived with your family for at least ten months before moving in.

Stephens College

This school in Missouri loves animals so much they have a pet-fostering program. If you don't have your own pet, you can foster a dog from a local shelter right in your dorm room. Students who bring their own pets can even take them into certain campus buildings. They allow everything from cats and dogs to sugar gliders. The college also offers a pet-themed scholarship for some students.

Lees-McRae College

Located in the mountains of North Carolina, Lees-McRae was one of the first schools to allow pets in classrooms. Dogs and cats are welcome in several residence halls. The campus is surrounded by trails, making it perfect for students who want to hike with their dogs between study sessions. You must register your pet and pay a semester fee, but many students find it worth the cost.

Hanover College

Hanover is working to become the most pet-friendly school in the country. They allow small caged animals in every building on campus. Students living in specific halls can also register large pets like dogs or cats. The school even provides "Pooch Passes" for registered pets. This allows your dog to accompany you to various outdoor spots around the beautiful 650-acre campus.

Famous Campus Therapy Animals

If you can't bring a pet of your own, look for a school with a famous resident animal. These pets provide stress relief for the entire student body:

  • Arizona State University: Look for Ozzie the therapy dog. He is a regular at campus events and helps students relax during finals week. ASU News: Therapy Dogs for Student Stress Relief

  • University of Connecticut: Meet Tully, a yellow lab who works for the campus police. She is a trained comfort dog who attends orientation and visits student lounges.

  • Yale University: Heidi is a yellow lab who works at the law school library. Students can "check her out" for a quick cuddle session to lower their stress levels.
